Also called the Cross of Pardon, this devotion was made known through Marie-Julie Jahenny, the Breton mystic, in 1873. Its design is deliberate: the invocations cast into the arms are what the devotion asks the wearer to say — pleas for pardon, for mercy, and for grace at the hour of death.
It is kept in three ways. Worn, so the invocations are said through the day. Hung in the home, usually near the door or over a bed. Or given to someone facing an illness or a death in the family, which is the reason most people buy it.
