32" San Damiano Cross
The painted icon cross that spoke to young Francis of Assisi is the model for this 32-inch San Damiano Cross. Praying before it in the crumbling chapel of San Damiano, he heard Christ ask him to rebuild His Church, a call that began the Franciscan movement. The cross shows Christ serene and victorious rather than slumped in agony, surrounded by Mary, St. John and other witnesses, with the Ascension above. The Poor Clares carried the original to the Basilica of St. Clare in Assisi, where it still hangs.
At 32 inches it is well suited to a chapel, a side altar, a friary or convent hallway or a Franciscan school classroom, and it gives a parish prayer room a focal point.
