On 25 March 1858, asked once more for her name, the lady in the grotto at Massabielle answered in the local Occitan: Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou — I am the Immaculate Conception. Bernadette did not understand the phrase and had to repeat it all the way home so as not to forget it.
This is the figure that answer produced: hands joined, blue sash, a golden rose on each foot. At twenty-four inches it is the size used for garden grottoes, parish Lourdes shrines, hospital chapels and the homes of the sick, for whom Lourdes has always been the destination.
