The Lady of the grotto, seventeen inches tall: white gown, blue sash, hands joined, eyes lifted, a rosary hanging from her arm and gold roses on her feet. Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes in 1858 and asked for penance, for a procession, and for a chapel to be built; millions come each year to the spring and the baths. She is the patroness of the sick, and the Church keeps her feast on February 11.
