Scapular of Our Lady of Sorrows
The black scapular of the Seven Dolors belongs to the Servite Order, founded in Florence in 1233 by seven men who took Our Lady's sorrows as the whole of their spirituality. The devotion counts seven: Simeon's prophecy, the flight into Egypt, the loss in the Temple, the meeting on the road, the crucifixion, the descent from the cross, the burial.
It is worn by those keeping the Seven Sorrows devotion, and it is often given to the bereaved — not to console quickly, but because grief is taken seriously by a Church that gave it a feast on 15 September.
