This 12-inch St. Peter statue honors Simon, the Galilean fisherman whom Jesus renamed Peter, the rock on which He would build His Church. Christ entrusted him with the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and Peter, after denying the Lord three times and weeping over it, became the first Bishop of Rome and was martyred there under Nero. Christian art traditionally identifies him by the keys. The Church honors him with St. Paul on June 29 and keeps the Chair of St. Peter on February 22.
