Christians in Jerusalem kept the memory of Mary’s falling asleep from the earliest centuries, and by the sixth century the feast of her passage into heaven was celebrated across the East. The image of the Assumption, with Our Lady borne upward, has carried that memory ever since.
At twenty-four inches this is the largest of our tabletop Assumptions, right for a home altar with room around it, a convent parlor, a parish meeting room or a sheltered garden niche. It is often chosen for a parents’ anniversary.
