St. Joseph with the baby Jesus is the Nativity carried forward: the Child no longer in the manger but in his foster father's arms, as he would have been on the road to Egypt. Joseph is patron of the Universal Church, of fathers and of a happy death, and his solemnity is March 19.
Fifty-four inches is a church-size figure for a sanctuary, a narthex, a church entrance, a cemetery or a school plaza. Parishes set it opposite a Madonna and Child so that both parents hold the Lord, and families dedicate it in memory of a father.
